Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that impacts the brain and nervous system, characterized as a “spectrum disorder” due to its multiple causes and diverse types of seizures. The condition can vary in severity and impact from person to person, often co-existing with other conditions. Those with epilepsy are susceptible to frequent seizures that arise from disruptions in the brain’s electrical activity. Seizures can lead to temporary loss of control over movement, vision, or awareness, and in some cases, even loss of consciousness. While seizures typically last only a few minutes, they may occasionally persist for longer periods. Although epilepsy can emerge during childhood or later in life, the underlying cause remains unknown in most cases. It is common for physicians to be unable to pinpoint the cause of seizures.
