Health and social care workers are required to maintain patient confidentiality. When
patient information should be share to continue to provide care, it is safe to assume the
patient will agree to the information being shared. However, the patient should be aware
that this is occurring (e.g. referral from GP to a consultant). Patients must give explicit
consent for their information to be used when it is not required for healthcare services (e.g.
research study).
