What is Verification of Death training?

Verification of Death training explains the processes healthcare professionals should follow when establishing that a person has died and responding appropriately after death.

Verification of death is distinct from certification of the medical cause of death. The latter forms part of the statutory death certification process and, in England and Wales, is governed by requirements including the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death Regulations 2024. Legislation.gov.uk

This Verification of Death Course covers who can confirm death, responding to expected and unexpected deaths, professional and legal considerations, record keeping, information that should be documented, co-ordination with other professionals, circumstances involving the police, and cultural, faith and spiritual considerations.

Learners develop knowledge that can support safe practice alongside their employer’s policies, local procedures, professional scope of practice and appropriate clinical competency assessment.

Who Is This Course For?

The Verification of Death Course is suitable for healthcare professionals and other workers who require knowledge of verification of death procedures because of their role.

It can be relevant across hospitals, hospices, care homes, nursing homes, community services, primary care and domiciliary care.
The course may also support staff who do not personally verify death but need to understand what happens when someone dies, including appropriate escalation, documentation, communication and preservation of dignity.
Completion of online training alone does not automatically authorise an individual to verify death. Organisations should determine who may undertake verification in accordance with applicable law, professional scope of practice, local policy, training and demonstrated competence.

Why Is Verification of Death training important?

Verification of death is a significant clinical and professional responsibility. Staff need to understand what actions are appropriate when a person dies, how the death should be documented and when circumstances require escalation.

Effective training helps reduce the risk of inappropriate action, incomplete records, poor communication or failure to follow procedures for an unexpected or potentially suspicious death. It also supports respectful treatment of the deceased and sensitive communication with relatives and others involved.

In England and Wales, statutory death certification arrangements include scrutiny by medical examiners and requirements for referral to the coroner in specified circumstances. Legislation.gov.uk

Verification of Death training therefore supports professional competence, governance and consistent workplace practice, but should operate alongside local policies, role-specific training and competency assessment where staff are expected to perform verification themselves.

Is Verification of Death training a legal requirement in the UK?

There is no single UK law stating that every healthcare or social care worker must complete a named Verification of Death training course.

However, organisations must ensure that staff undertaking clinical responsibilities are appropriately trained, competent and working within their role, professional responsibilities and local policies. Whether a particular professional may verify death also depends on the circumstances, organisational procedures and applicable national guidance.

In England and Wales, the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death Regulations 2024 govern important aspects of medical certification and medical examiner scrutiny. These regulations should not be confused with the separate clinical process of verifying that death has occurred. Legislation.gov.uk

Employers should therefore determine training and competency requirements according to the employee’s role and ensure staff understand local procedures for expected deaths, unexpected deaths, documentation, escalation and referral.

Verification of Death training FAQ?

Verification of death is the process of establishing that a person has died by following the appropriate clinical procedure and organisational protocol. It is different from certifying the medical cause of death. Verification establishes the fact of death, while medical certification concerns recording the cause of death through the statutory certification process.

Verification of Death training is particularly relevant to registered nurses, nurse practitioners, doctors, paramedics and other healthcare professionals whose duties may involve responding to or verifying deaths. It can also benefit healthcare assistants, support workers, care staff and other professionals who need to understand what happens following a death, even if they do not personally undertake verification.

Registered nurses may verify death in appropriate circumstances where this is permitted by applicable procedures and their employer’s policy, and where they have the necessary training and competence. Completing an online Verification of Death Course should not, by itself, be treated as authorisation to perform the procedure. Nurses should follow their employer’s local policy and professional responsibilities.

There is no single UK-wide legal requirement stating that healthcare workers must complete a course with this specific title. Employers must, however, ensure workers are appropriately trained and competent for duties they perform. Staff involved in verification should therefore receive training and competency assessment appropriate to their role and follow relevant local and national procedures.

Verification establishes that a person has died. Certification deals with the medical cause of death and the statutory documentation required for death registration. They are separate processes and should not be treated as interchangeable. In England and Wales, current MCCD arrangements include scrutiny through the statutory medical examiner system introduced in September 2024.

An unexpected, suspicious or otherwise concerning death should be managed according to the applicable escalation and reporting procedures. Staff should avoid disturbing anything unnecessarily and contact the appropriate senior clinician, emergency service, police or coroner as required by the circumstances and local policy. The Verification of Death Course covers expected and unexpected deaths, co-ordination with others and police involvement.

The Caredemy Verification of Death Course takes approximately 1 hour to complete and provides 1 CPD point. It is delivered online, allowing learners to work through the material remotely. Learners receive 12 months’ access and, after successfully completing the online assessment, can access their digital course certificate.

There is no universal statutory refresher interval applying to every worker. Refresher frequency should be determined by the employer’s policy, the learner’s professional role, competency requirements, changes to guidance and how frequently the procedure is performed. Refresher training may be appropriate when procedures change or where an employer identifies a need to reassess knowledge or competence.
