Who the Course is For

The course is designed for a broad range of professionals and volunteers who interact with children and families.

• Early Years Practitioners (Nursery Staff, Childminders): This course is crucial for those in daily contact with very young children. Their close and consistent interactions mean they are often the first to notice early signs of abuse, neglect, or developmental concerns.

• Healthcare Professionals (Nurses, GPs, Allied Health Workers): Professionals like nurses and GPs are in a unique position to identify signs of abuse during appointments. They can observe injuries, developmental delays, and behavioral issues that may indicate a safeguarding concern, making accurate record-keeping and referrals vital.

• Social Care Workers (Support Workers, Residential Staff): These professionals often work with vulnerable children and families already known to social services. The course helps them understand their role in implementing care plans, monitoring safety, and ensuring children receive the support they need.

• Education Support Staff (Assistants, Lunchtime Supervisors): Education support staff spend significant time with children in less formal settings, giving them a valuable perspective on a child’s social and emotional well-being. They play a key role in a school’s safeguarding team by reporting concerns to the designated safeguarding lead.

• Youth Workers & Mentors: Those who build trusting relationships with young people in informal settings are well-placed to identify emotional distress or risky behaviors. The course teaches them how to listen to young people and, most importantly, when and how to escalate a concern to statutory services.

• Volunteers in Community Groups or Sports Clubs: Volunteers have a responsibility to ensure a safe environment for children in their care. The training helps them understand their duty to report concerns and follow their organization’s safeguarding policies, even with occasional contact.

• Passenger Transport Workers and Anyone with Occasional Child Contact: Even those with a limited role, such as bus drivers or sports coaches, have a duty to be vigilant. They are taught to recognize and report any concerning behavior, such as a child who appears distressed or unsupervised.

• Other Relevant Professions: The course is also suitable for a wide array of other roles, including police officers, firefighters, leisure centre staff, and anyone whose job or voluntary work brings them into contact with children. It serves as an excellent induction, refresher training, or as a foundation before progressing to more advanced levels of safeguarding.
