Why Is Bullying & Harassment in the Workplace training important?
Bullying and harassment can affect physical and psychological health, staff morale, working relationships, productivity and retention. Persistent unacceptable behaviour can also contribute to work-related stress. HSE guidance identifies bullying and harassment as behaviours that can contribute to work-related stress and recommends systems for responding to unacceptable behaviour.
Training helps workers recognise concerns earlier and understand appropriate routes for recording, reporting and responding to them. For managers and employers, this supports consistent workplace standards and helps build an environment where concerns are taken seriously.
In healthcare and social care, the course is also relevant to situations involving patients, service users, relatives and other third parties. HSE emphasises that workers in health and social care should not regard violent or aggressive behaviour as a normal part of their work.
Is Bullying & Harassment in the Workplace training a legal requirement in the UK?
There is no general UK law requiring every employee to complete a specific “Bullying & Harassment in the Workplace” training course.
However, employers have legal responsibilities that make effective prevention, policies, management procedures and appropriate training important. The Equality Act 2010 protects workers from unlawful harassment related to protected characteristics and from sexual harassment.
Since 26 October 2024, the Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act 2023 has required employers to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment of workers.
Training is therefore an important practical measure, although completing this particular course alone does not demonstrate that an employer has fulfilled all its legal duties. Employers should also maintain appropriate policies, reporting arrangements, risk assessments and management procedures.

Bullying & Harassment in the Workplace training FAQ?
What is bullying and harassment in the workplace?
Workplace bullying generally involves unacceptable behaviour that intimidates, humiliates, degrades or undermines another person. Harassment has a specific legal meaning under the Equality Act 2010 where unwanted conduct related to a protected characteristic, or sexual harassment, meets the statutory test. Not every instance of workplace conflict is legally harassment, so context and circumstances matter.
Who needs bullying and harassment training?
The training is suitable for employees, managers, employers, HR professionals, trade union representatives, health and safety representatives, workplace mediators and counsellors. It is also relevant to healthcare and social care teams where staff may encounter inappropriate behaviour from colleagues, patients, service users, relatives or other third parties.
Is bullying and harassment training a legal requirement in the UK?
The completion of this specific course is not generally a legal requirement. However, employers have legal responsibilities to prevent unlawful harassment and, since October 2024, must take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment of workers. Training can form part of an organisation’s wider prevention and compliance arrangements.
How often should bullying and harassment training be completed?
There is no single statutory interval requiring everyone to complete this particular course. Employers should determine appropriate training frequency based on their risks, policies, workforce and sector. Refresher training can be particularly useful following policy changes, incidents, complaints, organisational changes or when managers need to reinforce expected standards.
How long does the Bullying & Harassment in the Workplace Course take?
The Caredemy Bullying & Harassment in the Workplace Course takes approximately 1 hour to complete. It is self-paced, allowing learners to study online at a convenient time. The existing course also includes a multiple-choice assessment and unlimited exam retakes.
What does bullying and harassment training cover?
The course covers what bullying is, counterproductive behaviour, psychological contracts, organisational justice and climate, workplace bullying, its impact, unacceptable behaviours, employer and manager responsibilities, individual actions, recording concerns, mediation, formal and legal action, cyberbullying and witnessing bullying.
Can bullying involve patients, relatives or third parties?
Yes. Workplace bullying and unacceptable behaviour can involve people outside the immediate workforce. The Caredemy course specifically includes bullying by a patient, patient relative or third party. This is particularly relevant to healthcare and social care workers who may interact with patients, service users, relatives and members of the public.
What certificate do I receive after completing the course?
After successfully completing the online multiple-choice assessment, learners receive a CPD-accredited Bullying & Harassment in the Workplace certificate. The existing course requires a minimum score of 80%, with unlimited retakes available, and the certificate can be downloaded from the course portal.
