What is the Care Certificate?
Created by Health Education England, Skills for Care and Skills for Health, the Care Certificate defines 15 core standards that need to be adhered to in the day-to-day activities of any care provider. The standards were established following the 2013 Cavendish Review that explored the training and support received by care professionals. By applying these standards, the goal is to ensure that care workers have the right knowledge and skills to deliver high-quality, safe and effective care.
The Care Certificate Standards
The 15 standards as detailed by the Care Certificate programme are as follows:
- Standard 1: Understand Your Role
- Standard 2: Your Personal Development
- Standard 3: Duty of Care
- Standard 4: Equality & Diversity
- Standard 5: Work in a Person-Centred Way
- Standard 6: Communication
- Standard 7: Privacy & Dignity
- Standard 8: Fluids & Nutrition
- Standard 9: Awareness of Mental Health, Dementia & Learning Disability
- Standard 10: Safeguarding Adults
- Standard 11: Safeguarding Children
- Standard 12: Basic Life Support
- Standard 13: Health & Safety
- Standard 14: Handling Information
- Standard 15: Infection Prevention & Control
The Care Certificate programme is regularly reviewed to ensure it covers the current and relevant needs of the sector. Therefore, although the care certificate doesn’t expire, you may need to take refresher courses for some of the standards above (every 1-3 years).
Do I Need a Care Certificate?
Even though the Care Certificate is not a legal requirement, all health and care workers are generally expected to have one and if you don’t, this may have a negative impact on your chances of securing a role as a carer in the UK.
Additionally, in a care role, you will be required by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to practise the 15 standards covered by the Care Certificate. For employees who don’t have Care Certificate training, employers are expected to provide the necessary training within the first three months of employment.
Therefore, care skills training is essential for anyone who wishes to work or is already working in the care and health sector, including:
- Anyone new to the sector
- Carers in hospices, nursing homes and residential homes
- Social care workers
- Domiciliary care providers
