What is Acute Care training?
Acute care training develops knowledge needed to recognise and respond to a patient whose condition is worsening. This course focuses on NEWS2, a standardised system that brings routine physiological observations together to help assess acute illness severity.

Why Is Acute Care training important?

Is Acute Care training a legal requirement in the UK?
There is no general UK legal requirement to complete a course specifically called the “Acute Care Course”. Training needs depend on a worker’s duties, patient risks and employer policies.
In England, the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 requires relevant providers to ensure staff have the competence, skills and experience to deliver safe care under Regulation 12. No. NEWS2 supports recognition of deterioration but does not diagnose sepsis or rule out serious illness. A patient may need urgent clinical assessment even when their score is low. Report concerning changes and follow local escalation procedures. NICE’s approach to deterioration allows clinical concern to trigger a response alongside physiological scoring.
