What is Chaperones training?

Chaperone training prepares staff to understand their responsibilities when supporting patients during intimate or sensitive examinations. It explains why an impartial observer may be needed and how this role differs from simply accompanying someone to an appointment.
Caredemy’s Chaperones Course explores patient choice, preparation for examinations, record keeping and recognising distress. It also addresses situations involving young people, video consultations and patients who may lack capacity.
The training provides a foundation for carrying out chaperone duties within an employer’s policies. Completing an online course should be supported by local induction and confirmation of competence before staff undertake the role independently. NHS England guidance states that chaperones should be appropriately trained and assessed as competent.

Why Is Chaperone training important?

Sensitive examinations can leave patients feeling exposed, anxious or unsure about speaking up. Staff need to understand how their presence can support dignity, reassurance and appropriate professional boundaries.

Chaperone training helps staff recognise discomfort, understand their responsibilities and respond to concerns. It also supports clearer documentation, reducing uncertainty about who was present and what arrangements were agreed.

A chaperone must be able to observe appropriately and raise concerns about a clinician’s behaviour or actions. Their presence does not replace consent or remove the clinician’s responsibilities. GMC

For employers, the Chaperones Course provides a foundation for consistent practice when combined with local procedures, supervision and checks that staff can fulfil their designated duties.

Is Chaperone training a legal requirement in the UK?

There is no blanket UK law requiring every healthcare worker to complete a named chaperone course. However, staff undertaking chaperone duties need appropriate preparation.

In England, Regulation 18 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 requires relevant providers to ensure staff are competent and receive training and support appropriate to their duties. This means employers must address training needs when allocating chaperone responsibilities. Care Quality Commission

CQC guidance for GP practices states that formal chaperones must be trained. GMC standards also require clinicians to be satisfied that their chaperone is trained for the role. Care Quality Commission

Employers should check competence, maintain training records and apply the requirements relevant to their UK nation. A certificate alone does not demonstrate compliance.

Chaperone training FAQ?

A chaperone is an impartial observer who supports appropriate practice during an intimate or sensitive examination. They help protect dignity, notice distress and raise concerns where necessary. Their role is different from that of a friend or relative attending for emotional support, although a patient may request both.

Staff designated to act as formal chaperones need training appropriate to their responsibilities. This can include healthcare assistants, nurses and suitably prepared non-clinical staff. Receptionists should not be assigned the role simply because they are available: employers must establish that they understand the examination, their responsibilities and how to raise concerns.

Caredemy’s Chaperones Course takes approximately one hour. Learning is online, with instant access and 12 months available to complete or revisit the material. After successfully completing the multiple choice assessment, learners receive an instant digital CPD certificate to download or print. Unlimited assessment retakes are included.

Refresher learning should follow your employer’s policy and identified training needs. Review your knowledge when procedures change, you return to chaperoning after a break or supervision identifies a gap. Employers should review learning needs at appropriate intervals and provide ongoing support to maintain competence, rather than relying solely on an earlier certificate.

CQC expects staff acting as formal chaperones in GP practices to have received appropriate training. It does not require this particular commercial course. Providers need evidence that staff can fulfil the role, supported by suitable policies and training arrangements. Completing a course contributes to that evidence but does not automatically establish CQC compliance.

Yes. Record the offer and refusal, and discuss the patient’s preferences. If the clinician is uncomfortable proceeding without a chaperone, they should explain why and consider appropriate alternatives. Any decision to postpone or arrange another clinician must take account of whether delaying the examination could adversely affect the patient’s health.

Chaperoning should be considered when a remote consultation involves an intimate examination, although many such examinations are unsuitable for video. Services should offer a chaperone where appropriate and document the arrangements, including who attended and which parts of the consultation they witnessed. Remote delivery does not remove the need to protect privacy.

An online certificate demonstrates successful completion of the course assessment. Your employer must also establish that you can carry out chaperone duties safely in your setting. This may involve local induction, supervised practice and a competence assessment. NHS England guidance requires people acting as chaperones to have appropriate training and be deemed competent.
