What is Privacy and Dignity in Care training?
Privacy and dignity in care training teaches staff how to respect a person’s personal space, information, preferences and right to make decisions.
Privacy includes protecting someone from unnecessary exposure during personal care and keeping sensitive conversations confidential. Dignity means recognising each person’s value, listening to their wishes and treating them respectfully.
Caredemy’s course uses case studies, knowledge checks and self-reflection to explore how staff behaviour affects people receiving care. Learners examine poor practice, consider respectful alternatives and explore maintaining dignity, raising concerns and mental capacity.
The training supports the knowledge needed for everyday care. Learners should apply it alongside workplace procedures, supervision and practical assessment appropriate to their role.

Why Is Privacy and Dignity in Care training important?
People receiving care may depend on staff for washing, dressing, toileting or other personal support. Care delivered without consideration can cause embarrassment, distress and loss of trust.
Privacy and Dignity in Care training helps staff recognise these risks and consider how their actions affect the person. Respectful communication, appropriate privacy and support for individual choices help protect emotional wellbeing and encourage participation in care.
Professional competence also involves recognising poor treatment and raising concerns rather than allowing it to continue. For regulated services in England, protecting privacy and supporting autonomy are explicit parts of CQC Regulation 10. Training supports these standards when reinforced through supervision and everyday practice.
Is Privacy and Dignity in Care training a legal requirement in the UK?
There is no UK-wide law requiring every care worker to complete this particular named course.
In England, the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 require regulated providers to treat people with dignity and respect under Regulation 10. Regulation 18 requires appropriate staff training, support and supervision for their duties. Employers must identify relevant learning needs and check that staff apply their learning. Care Quality Commission
The Mental Capacity Act 2005, applicable in England and Wales, also supports people’s involvement in decisions about their care. Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate legal frameworks. Course completion can contribute to training evidence, but a certificate alone does not demonstrate workplace competence or guarantee compliance.

Privacy and Dignity in Care training FAQ?
What is the difference between privacy and dignity in care?
Privacy means respecting someone’s personal space, body and confidential information. Dignity means treating them as a valued individual whose wishes and choices matter. Closing curtains during personal care protects privacy; explaining what you are doing and listening to the person helps maintain dignity. Both should be reflected in everyday care.
Who needs privacy and dignity training?
Staff providing care or support should know how to protect privacy and dignity. This includes care assistants, healthcare assistants, nurses, support workers, personal assistants and social care teams. Managers and supervisors also need to recognise poor practice and support improvements. Employers should select training that reflects each worker’s responsibilities and the people they support.
How long does the Privacy and Dignity in Care course take?
The course takes approximately one hour to complete. It includes case studies, knowledge checks and opportunities to reflect on care practice, followed by an online multiple choice test. Completion time may vary depending on your reading pace and how long you spend considering the scenarios. Course access is available for 12 months.
Is privacy and dignity training compulsory for CQC compliance?
CQC does not require staff to buy this specific course. In England, regulated providers must protect people’s dignity and privacy and ensure staff receive training appropriate to their duties. Relevant learning can support those responsibilities, but managers must also assess practice, provide supervision and address concerns. Completing a course alone does not establish compliance.
How often should privacy and dignity training be refreshed?
There is no universal statutory renewal interval for a course with this title. Employers should review refresher needs through supervision, observed practice, complaints, incidents and changes in responsibilities. Refresher learning may be appropriate when staff struggle to protect privacy, disregard individual choices or need support after a concern about care standards.
Does this course cover Care Certificate Standard 7?
The course addresses topics relevant to Care Certificate Standard 7: Privacy and Dignity, including respectful care, confidentiality and individual choice. It can support knowledge learning, but it does not complete the full Care Certificate. Standard 7 also requires assessment of practical actions, which employers must arrange in the workplace.
How does mental capacity relate to privacy and dignity?
Respecting dignity includes supporting people to make their own decisions. Under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 in England and Wales, capacity must be presumed unless established otherwise, and an unwise decision does not by itself prove incapacity. Staff should offer appropriate decision-making support and follow relevant procedures when capacity is in doubt.
Will I receive a certificate, and can I retake the assessment?
Yes. After successfully completing the online assessment, you receive a digital CPD-accredited Privacy and Dignity in Care certificate to download or print. Unlimited assessment retakes are included. The certificate records course completion and can support your training record; employers should also check how you apply the learning during care.
