Why Is Prevent Strategy training important?

Is Prevent Strategy training a legal requirement in the UK?
Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 places a duty on specified authorities to have due regard to preventing people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.
Statutory guidance expects relevant staff to receive appropriate Prevent training. However, the legislation does not require everyone to complete this particular Caredemy course, and the duty does not automatically apply to every private employer or care provider.

Is Prevent training mandatory for all care workers?
Prevent training is not a blanket statutory requirement for every care worker. Whether it is required depends on the organisation’s legal duties, contractual requirements, safeguarding policies and the employee’s role. Providers should assess their responsibilities and choose suitable training. Completing a certificate alone does not demonstrate that an organisation has fulfilled all its Prevent obligations.
How often should Prevent training be refreshed?
There is no single refresher interval applying to every sector and role. Employers should determine frequency through an assessment of training needs, considering responsibilities, local risks and relevant sector requirements. Staff may need an earlier update when guidance, referral routes or workplace procedures change. Check your employer’s policy rather than assuming that all Prevent training requires annual renewal.

Record what you have observed or heard, distinguishing facts from assumptions, and speak promptly to the designated safeguarding lead or Prevent contact. They can help assess the concern and determine the appropriate referral route. Staff should know their local arrangements and seek advice when unsure how to respond.
What is Channel, and how does it relate to Prevent?
Channel is a multi-agency programme in England and Wales that supports people susceptible to being drawn into terrorism. A referral allows concerns to be assessed; it does not automatically lead to Channel support. Participation in support is voluntary and requires consent. Local authorities, police and other partners work together to consider needs and coordinate appropriate help.
