Special Considerations
There are several special considerations you may need to take into account:Â
Women and girls should be offered relevant information about contraception, pregnancy, breastfeeding, caring for children, and menopause. This information is tailored to each woman or girl’s individual needs.
Epilepsy is common in people with learning disabilities. These individuals should receive the same standard of care. Safety problems should be addressed by health and social care workers, as well as planning for any medical tests, such as needing an anaesthetic prior to an MRI if they need help staying still. These individuals are also more at risk for SUDEP.
Children and teens should have support at their school if needed.
Healthcare professionals should be aware of any possible reactions between AEDs and other medications the individual may be taking.
Some minority ethnic groups may have cultural and communication needs that require services such as an interpreter when discussing diagnosis and treatment.
