Medicines must be segregated and disposed of with care since some medications are hazardous. Medicines are divided into three types for segregation and disposal:
These medicines are toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction. These are disposed of in purple lidded rigid bins and require incineration.
These medicines contain no pharmaceutical agents, such as saline or glucose intravenous bags. These are disposed of into a sluice or slop hopper and empty bags disposed of in the correct waste stream.
Most medicines contain pharmaceutically active agents and should be disposed of in the blue-lidded containers
