There are three recognised levels of palliative care specialisation:
Level 1 – Palliative Care Approach: A palliative care approach is a core skill for every clinician at the community and hospital level. Care needs of patients are met comprehensively without referral to specialist palliative care units.
Level 2 – General Palliative Care: Individuals and their families/carers benefit from the expertise of healthcare professionals who have additional experience and training in palliative care.
Level 3 – Specialist Palliative Care: Services provided are the core activity of the professional, who provides care to individuals with more complex and demanding care needs.
