Learn about what can happen when an incident goes unreported.
Heloise and Barbara work at the same residential home, but neither has been working there very long. Heloise is not British but has a work visa. She has been hired by an agency to work in the residential home.
Barbara is helping Heloise move a resident from his bed to a wheelchair using a hoist. The resident's room is crowded with equipment and there is not enough space to move the hoist. During the procedure, Heloise becomes trapped between the wall and the hoist. A piece of furniture falls and pins her down against the wall. The resident is left in the hoist and is becoming distressed.
Barbara rings the emergency bell but no one comes to help. Barbara eventually must leave the room to get help. She is told by other staff that they don't respond to the bell for that resident's room because she is 'always ringing it'.
Helena has bruising and is shaken up by the event. The resident is also distressed. Barbara challenges the care manager and is told that if the resident is moved to a larger room, her family must pay more for the additional space.
Barbara encourages Heloise to report the incident but she is reluctant due to her work visa and worries she will lose her job and have to leave the country. Instead of reporting her concerns, Barbara leaves the organisation.
