When a procedure is performed under sterile conditions, the procedure is aseptic. Any part of a device or other equipment that comes into contact with a susceptible site on a patient remains sterile. The parts of the equipment that come into contact with non-intact skin or tissue should be protected by keeping them within sterile packaging or placing them n a sterile surface or sterile fields. Sterile items do not come into contact with anything that is not sterile and only sterile items come into direct contact with the susceptible site.
